M/V Margy Kelso - Galveston, TexasIn November of 1982, I began working in the Marine Industry aboard Inland Towing Vessels.  I started as a deckhand with Big Tow Barge Lines aboard the M/V Rai Elizabeth Kelso (800 hp - Galveston, Texas) and worked until I obtained my USCG Second Class Operator's License in October 1984; I worked as Licensed Deckhand the remainder of my tour of duty on this vessel.  I was transferred, as steersman to the M/V Margy Kelso (1078 hp - Galveston, Texas), where I eventually became pilot and served the appropriate sea time to obtain my USCG Operator's License in October 1986.  In March 1988, Big Tow Barge Lines sold the M/V Margy Kelso to McDonough Marine Service and the crew was given the option to go with the boat, as I opted to do.  The M/V Margy Kelso was renamed as the M/V Ivis R (1078 hp - New Orleans, Louisiana) and I served as pilot until June 1988, when  I was promoted to Relief Captain; I served as Relief Captain until promoted to Captain in November 1988.  While working on the boats for McDonough Marine Service, I rode trips on the M/V Mister Mac (1200 hp - New Orleans, Louisiana) and the M/V Mark K (1200 hp - New Orleans, Louisiana).  In November 1989, I was promoted to Assistant Port Captain and worked in McDonough Marine Service's Houston office managing the boats and shipyard; while in this position, I operated the yard shift boat M/V Elvera B (400 hp - Houston, Texas).  In March 1994, my title was renamed to Operations, whereby I became involved with more administrative tasks associated with the boats and shipyard.  I served in Operations until June 1997, when I went to school full-time to achieve a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.  During my full-time schooling, I worked several trips on the M/V Miss Laura (800 hp - Houston, Texas) for Woodcreek Towing and M/V Claude R (1600 hp - New Orleans, Louisiana) for McDonough Marine Service.  After being employed as a Database Administrator at Citizens Medical Center for two years, and due to a reduction in overtime availability, I opted to return to the boats to gain sea time for the satisfaction of licensing requirements in April 2002.  While being re-employed by McDonough Marine Service, I served on the M/V John G (1600 hp - New Orleans, Louisiana) and the M/V Bernard P (800 hp - New Orleans, Louisiana).  In August 2002, McDonough Marine Service contracted out the crewing and management of their boats to Inland Marine Management Corporation out of Galiano, Louisiana, and my employment was transferred to the new management company.
