Initial Position - Relief Captain (Wheelman on Inland Towing Vessel) - 04-2002 to 08-2002
Working on boats again due to fulfillment of licensing requirements, as listed in 46 CFR 10.209 c (i), which requires one year of sea service time to renew a USCG Captain's license.  Responsibilities included the maintenance, safety, operational, and regulatory management as it applied to the boat, tow, and crew. Managed a crew complement of four persons. Maintained vessel logs, required company / governmental paperwork, supply inventories, maintenance schedules, and company policy / safety standards for boat.  Company opted to contract out the management of the boats to a boat management company and position with company was terminated; was immediately employed by boat management company.

Developed computer applications in Q-Basic to aide in the calculation and reporting of fuel tax including reports for management that allowed evaluation of fuel purchasing and a total monthly / yearly fuel cost analysis.  Developed invoicing applications for the calculation of tonnage hauled including management reports that evaluated monthly / yearly boat / barge revenue, and analysis of tonnage per boat and location.  Performed software engineering tasks including design / requirements, coding, testing, documentation, and maintenance of the developed application, plus trained users in the use of the applications.  Performed cost / benefit analysis on proposed technology systems for the office.  Managed shipyard crew of up to six (6) employees and tugboat crews comprised of eighteen (18) employees and performed purchasing duties associated with office, shipyard, and tugboat / barge operations.  Performed Sales Department duties including quotation preparation for barge rental / cargo transportation proposals, interacted with customers about their marine equipment needs, assigned marine equipment to jobs, and prepared invoices for customers.  Began converting programs developed in Q-Basic to Microsoft Visual Basic after providing cost / benefit analysis of converting the programs, while using the same data structures for easier implementation.

Continued converting the programs developed in Q-Basic to Visual Basic providing more efficient, user-friendly means of performing data entry with fewest amount of keystrokes.  Developed applications in Visual Basic to aid in grocery purchasing, equipment maintenance, and outside towing income tracking.  All office-based positions included IBM System 36 Mainframe usage and IBM AS-400 System usage including working with the system administrator on configuration / troubleshooting tasks. Maintained, acquired repair services, and performed troubleshooting on all office technology equipment. Co-managed the Operations Department for the Houston office including all responsibilities from the Assistant Port Captain's position, plus more administrative duties such as assisting with employee hiring, discipline, and termination and developing and implementing company policy and procedures as approved by the Vice President.
